Stair Riser Stickers vs Paint vs Wallpaper vs Tile

Stickers are the fastest way to put a pattern on stair risers, and the easiest to undo. Paint is cheapest for a single solid colour and is the most durable. Wallpaper suits large, continuous designs. Real tile lasts longest but is a renovation, not a weekend job. Which is best depends on whether you want a pattern, how long you want it, and whether you rent.

We make stair riser stickers, so we're biased. We'll tell you plainly when another option is the better one.

Side by side

Costs are rough figures for a typical straight staircase of 13 risers, about 36" wide. Prices vary a lot by region and product.

Riser stickers Paint Peel-and-stick wallpaper Real tile
Rough material cost About CA$150–220 (one strip per riser) About CA$40–100 for primer and paint; more for a stencilled pattern About CA$60–150, depending on rolls and waste Several hundred dollars and up, plus labour
Time An afternoon 1–3 days with drying time; longer for patterns An afternoon to a day; matching the pattern takes care Days, often with a contractor
Skill Low; the first riser takes practice Low for solid colour; high for stencilled patterns Medium High
Pattern Printed tile-look and other patterns, pre-sized to each riser Solid colour, unless you stencil Any, but you cut each riser from a roll Real tile
Removable Yes; peels off (see paint notes) Only by repainting Yes, similar to stickers No

Choose stickers if…

  • You want a tile-look or patterned staircase without the cost and mess of real tile.
  • You rent, or you like changing the look every few years.
  • You want each riser to arrive pre-sized, so you're trimming rather than cutting from a roll.

Choose paint if…

  • You want a single solid colour. It's cheaper and simpler.
  • Your stairs get heavy wear and you'd rather touch up than replace.
  • Your risers are rough or heavily textured. Stickers need a smooth surface.

Choose wallpaper if…

  • You want one continuous design flowing across a very wide staircase.
  • You already have leftover wallpaper and don't mind cutting each strip.

Choose real tile if…

  • It's a permanent renovation, especially outdoors or in a damp area where stickers aren't suitable.

A note on thickness

Riser stickers are thin vinyl, about the thickness of paper. From a distance they look like tile, but up close they won't have the depth or texture of real tile. Some people expect a thick tile-like product. If that's you, order a sample first so you can see and feel it.

Common questions

Can I combine paint and stickers?

Yes, and it's a popular look: paint the treads and stringers a solid colour and put patterned stickers on the risers. Let the paint cure fully before applying.

Which lasts longer?

Real tile, then paint (because it's easy to touch up), then stickers. Our stickers are good for 5+ years indoors on a sound surface. See how long they last.
