How Long Do Stair Riser Stickers Last?
Share
On a clean, smooth, sealed indoor riser, our stair riser stickers last 5 years or more. Many stay on as long as you want them. What shortens their life is the surface (raw wood, fresh or slick paint), moisture, and edges that weren't pressed down at install.
Here is what we have learned about how our stair riser stickers age, from our own installs and from customer feedback.
What wears out first
- Edges. If they weren't sealed well, or the surface was dusty or cold at install, edges are where lifting starts. Pressing them down with heat fixes most of it.
- The vinyl, not the print. We print with latex inks that bond into the vinyl. Normal scuffing from shoes damages the vinyl itself before the print wears away.
- Toe-kick areas on steep or narrow stairs, where shoes hit the riser every day.
What helps them last
- Install on cured paint or sealed wood (see which surfaces work).
- Apply in a warm room and press every edge firmly.
- Clean gently: soft cloth, mild soap, no abrasives (see cleaning guide).
- Keep them indoors and dry.
Over many years
Over long periods, vinyl can shrink very slightly, and the adhesive grips harder the longer it's on. That's good for staying power. But when you eventually remove very old stickers, go slowly with heat, as described in our removal steps.

Common questions
Do they fade in sunlight?
Indoors, away from strong direct sun, fading is minimal over normal timeframes. Like any printed material, years of direct sun through a window will fade them faster.
Are they OK with pets?
Generally, yes. Claws catching an edge is the main risk, so seal the edges well at install.
Can I use them outdoors or in an RV?
No. Outdoor weather, moisture and the temperature swings and vibration in trailers will break the bond.
